Greece can be entered by automobile from any of its land neighbors. From Italy, ferries will transport cars to Greece. From western Europe, the most popular route to Greece was through Yugoslavia. Following the trouble in former Yugoslavia during the 1990s, most motorists from western Europe arrived overland by Italy, and then took a trans-Adriatic ferry from there. Although the countries of former Yugoslavia have since stabilized, and Hungary-Romania-Bulgaria form another, albeit a much longer, alternative, the overland route through Italy now remains the most popular option.

Once you arrive to Athens follow the route below:

Route

To arrive at Elafonisos by car or by motorbike, from Athens you follow the route on the map.

The trip lasts approximately 4 to 4:30 hours. On the above map, select the blue route for a quicker transfer (approximately 10 minutes) to a new section of the Tripoli - Kalamata highway, following the instructions. By selecting the green section, you enter a provincial road. The distance is reduced by approximately 15 km and you avoid the last two toll stations. However, the section of the provincial road Tripolis - Sparta does not have a fence between the two traffic streams, so drive with great care, avoiding overtaking at the many "blind spots" of the route.

Recently, the section of the provincial road Skoura Pyri, which bypasses the city of Sparta, was delivered to circulation. By choosing this route the time is reduced by about 10 minutes. So far, electronic maps and GPS navigators are not up to date on this new route so it does not appear on the above maps. Before you enter the city of Sparta and before the Evrotas bridge, turn left and at the first roundabout follow the exit to Geraki, on your right. Then follow the road signs to Monemvasia, Neapoli and Elafonisos.

Your destination is the port of Pounta. From there you will get the Ferry Boat to reach the island of Elafonisos.
